In other words, Be the Bright Spot. Mary Beth's dad was sick with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in 2019. In a small hospice room, a little wet nose appeared through the crack of the door. When the family opened the door, a warm smile and a wagging tail greeted them. It was a therapy dog. This was the first time any of them had any awareness of what a therapy dog was, and it made the day at hospice a lot brighter.

After her dad passed, she got Piper. Piper was an unofficial therapy dog for the first few years of her life, helping Mary Beth navigate the complications of losing a parent relatively young. Later, Piper would become an actual certified therapy dog, serving the same floor at Vanderbilt Hospital where Mary Beth's dad had multiple surgeries.

Today, they are still an active therapy team and include elementary schools in the list of people and places they visit. The positive impact dogs have on us is undeniable, and the bond between a girl and her dog is unbreakable.
